Nocturnal

The moment he tasted the blood, Izbasa found himself gagging. Coughing and spluttering, he instinctively spat, turning away from the girl and releasing her to wipe his mouth with the back of his hand. She probably wouldn't appreciate him spitting blood all over her carpet, but he was too busy retching to really care, implying that he would have cared anyway. Really, things would have been a lot easier if she'd just been asleep like most people. And if she didn't have such disgusting tasting blood, for that matter.

"What is wrong with you?" He asked her once he'd recovered.
The girl, now sat on her bed, hand pressed to her neck, staring at the intruder with an appropriate mix of horror, disgust and confusion, replied "What's wrong with me? You just broke into my house and bit me!"
"Uh, firstly, your window was wide open, it was basically an invitation. Secondly, your blood is disgusting. There must be something wrong with you."
A few emotions crossed the girl's face, and Izbasa wasn't sure what they were, but there was definitely more confusion there. Maybe amusement and anger, but he couldn't be sure. He didn't socialise with his victims very much. He didn't even socialise with other vampires very much.
"You're weird." The girl told him. "You think you're a vampire or something?"
"Child, I do not think-"
"That's obvious."
Izbasa blinked, not expecting that interruption. "You are insolent."
"I am pissed off."
"I can see that." He turned to leave.
"Where are you going?" She sounded a bit nervous, possibly because he was walking to the open window, several floors up.
"To find blood that is actually consumable. I would rather starve than drink that. Honestly, it is always so hard to find someone who actually takes care of themselves now they have the chance to."
"I have anaemia." The girl said pathetically.
He turned to her again. "You know what is wrong with you? And you still let that run through your body? How do you survive like that? Can you take something for that? You should take something for that. You need to fix that, you cannot let that stay as it is."
"I don't need a health lecture from someone who sneaks into bedrooms to drink blood."
"Well, you are not doing something about it for yourself, so clearly you do." Ah. He had her there. "Have you seen a doctor about this? You should see a doctor. I will set you up with a doctor if it will help. In fact, no argument, your blood is disgusting, this is getting fixed before you do something even worse to your insides. Iron deficiency, correct? No problem." He walked to the window again, looking back to her just once more to ask "What is your name?"
"Like I'd tell you!" The girl replied. And with a shrug, he jumped out the window and disappeared into the night.

It was just two days later that he returned. She was sat on her bed, scrolling through tumblr on her phone when she heard the tap on her window. She'd made sure to close it and lock it this time. But there he was anyway, sat outside the window like he was perched on a ledge that she was pretty sure wasn't there, looking casual and carefree. Hesitantly, she put her phone down and went to open the window for him, feeling very much like this was a very, very bad idea. He stepped in just as casually, and showed her what he had in his arms. A cook book, a page he'd printed off from an NHS information site, something he'd written himself, several bottles of vitamins and supplements and an appointment card. Oh lord, this was happening.
"I made you an appointment with a competent doctor for this Friday, Italia."
"How did you learn my-"
"It is actually quite easy to find these things out." He started handing her the items. "Take at least one of each of these in the meantime, they will help make your blood healthy, and the doctor can give you further advice. This book contains various healthy recipes to help build yourself back to something vaguely normal and not disgusting, and I have noted down lots of foods and ingredients that are good for your blood that you can incorporate into your daily meals."
"Jeez, all this so you can have a nicer tasting meal yourself? Alright, vampire dude, guess you'd like me to stay away from garlic then, huh?"
He gave her a look. "My name is Izbasa. Costica Izbasa. And you are very rude. But you are dealing with this well, I will give you that. Most people either deny I exist or start screaming."
"Honestly, I'm freaked out enough that a random guy got into my room at night, never mind how high up we are, or the floating, or the fangs or whatever. Heck, until the floating I was still pretty sure you were just a nutcase who jumped out a window. They were going to report you dead on the news at some point."
Izbasa nodded. "I hear human males are known for sexually aggressive behaviour."
"Uh...yeah."
"Strigoi, not so much. But you are one of the ones who doesn't believe in us. We are endangered, not mythical. Though I will admit, there are so few of us left, and we are nocturnal, so we are rarely seen."
Italia regarded him curiously. Honestly, she felt like she should have been scared, like she had been when she'd looked up from her phone to see a random man in her bedroom (I mean, who wouldn't be?). But this time, she'd invited him in, and he'd not bitten her. They were talking. He was being friendly. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all. "Uh, my name's-"
"Italia Fiorenza Gambetta. I know."
"You also know my age, date of birth and address, judging by the fact you were able to make that appointment...is this like having a stalker?"
"Until you are in good health, yes."
"Crap." Well, at least he accepted he was a stalker. Italia reached for her phone, and the next thing he knew, Izbasa was blinded by a bright and sudden flash of light that had him reeling.
"What was that?" He shrieked, stumbling back and digging the heels of his palms into his eyes.
"Phone camera." Italia answered. "If I'm meeting a real life vampire, and he has no problem being known to the public, why not take a photo and keep this memory alive forever? Maybe I'll get it printed and framed."
He groaned, blinking rapidly and trying to get his vision back to normal. "Don't do that again."
"What if I do?"
"...I hate you."
"Love you too, Costi."
"Uh...huh?" Humans were confusing, Izbasa decided. He heaved a sigh. "Look, I will be checking up on you to ensure you take your pills and make your appointments."
"You really don't have to."
"No question. I am doing it."
"Do you get this involved with all your meals or are you just desperately lonely?"
"...Yes." He turned to leave again, and then asked "Why are you up at this hour again?"
"I have insomnia." Italia told him.
"You are a very unhealthy person." Was all he said before disappearing once more.

Epilogue:
It was a warm, sunny day, and Italia hadn't seen her new vampire friend for several days now. If it wasn't for the photo still on her phone, and all the gifts from him (including the blood stain on her carpet) she might still be inclined to think it all a dream. Then again, she never had much of an imagination, so she doubted even asleep she could have dreamt up an endangered vampire with some weird health obsession. She was on her phone again, not really paying full attention to her surroundings, so she jumped out of her skin when she heard the roar of "GET TO YOUR APPOINTMENT!" from right beside her ear.

There stood Costi, in the shadows in an alleyway, drawn up to his full height and baring his teeth. What a dork, Italia thought as she started walking again. "Nah. I don't feel like it."
"This is the third one you've missed!"
"What can I say? I don't like doctors. I barely like people."
"I barely like people as well but you still have to think about your health from time to time!"
"Maybe later."
"I will drag you to the appointment myself if I have to!"
Italia almost said 'I'd like to see you try', but as she opened her mouth, she turned back to see Costi hadn't moved a muscle. In fact, he was pressed against the wall of the alley, trying to keep as far into the shadows as he could go. She couldn't help it, she had to laugh. "What's wrong, Costi? Afraid of a little light?"
"The sun will go down eventually, child!"
"Until then, sweetheart!"
"I have your phone number!"
"You call me, I'll call the police!"
"The police cannot protect you from me!"
